V.S. Wakankar discovered a number of rock art sites (Wakankar 1978, 2005); the famous among them is the discovery of Bhimbetka in Raisen district, 45 km southwest of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. He discovered it while he was on a journey to Nagpur for a meeting of Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh in 1957. While observing the unique and attractive rocks of Bhimbetka from the train, he could not resist his temptation to visit them. Instead of going to Nagpur he dropped at the next station Barkhera, spent the whole night there and made the famous discovery next day.
